How do Scar Cover Up Tattoos work?

Accidental scar camouflage tattoos work by implanting specially formulated pigments into the skin, carefully matching them to your unique skin tone. This process effectively reduces the contrast between the scar and surrounding skin, making the scar less visible.

As experienced medical tattooists, we recommend the treatment once the scar has fully healed and is pale and flat. Combining our medical needling techniques with advanced colour matching ensures a smooth texture and a natural appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can camouflage tattooing help reduce the appearance of scars from accidents or injuries?

Yes – medical tattooing is often used to blend scars caused by accidents, such as cuts, bites, burns, falls, or other trauma. Once the scar has fully healed and is at least 15 months old, we can implant pigments to reduce colour contrast and make the area less visible.

What types of accidental scars are suitable for camouflage tattooing?

We can treat a wide variety of scars including those caused by animal bites, lacerations, glass injuries, cycling or car accidents, and other trauma. The scar must be flat, pale, and stable, without raised texture or discolouration from active healing.

Can I get a tattoo over an accidental scar that is raised or textured?

Raised (hypertrophic) or indented scars don’t always hold pigment evenly. In such cases, we may suggest medical needling first, which can soften and flatten the scar, making it more suitable for tattoo camouflage. We'll advise you during your consultation.

How well will the pigment match my natural skin colour?

At The Scar Camouflage Studio, we use custom-blended pigments tailored to your individual skin tone and undertones. This creates a natural-looking result that reduces the contrast between the scar and surrounding skin, making it far less noticeable.

How many sessions will I need to cover an accidental scar?

Most clients require 2 to 3 sessions, depending on the size, location, and depth of the scar. We allow time between sessions for the skin to heal and for the pigment to settle before building up colour as needed.

Will the scar camouflage tattoo completely hide my scar?

While we can’t remove scars entirely, camouflage tattooing makes them much less noticeable by blending the colour into your skin tone. The texture may remain visible on close inspection, but the overall appearance is significantly softened.

Is the procedure painful on areas with scar tissue?

Most clients find the treatment tolerable, and we apply a topical numbing agent to reduce discomfort. Scarred skin may be more or less sensitive than surrounding skin, depending on nerve recovery in the area..

Can I have camouflage tattooing on scars caused by childhood injuries?

Yes – as long as the scar is fully matured and stable, even scars from childhood can be treated. Many clients seek treatment for scars they've lived with for years, and are delighted by the improvement in appearance.

Will the results of scar camouflage tattooing last forever?

The results are semi-permanent and can last several years. However, because scar tissue may retain pigment differently, periodic touch-ups may be needed to keep the area looking consistent with the rest of your skin.
